Spiber announces its first collaboration with A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, aiming to explore the many possibilities of its innovative Brewed Protein™ fiber. This collaboration celebrates the 25th anniversary of the debut of world-renowned artist Hikaru Utada. To mark the occasion, Spiber provided Hikaru Utada with a dress, designed and created by A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, to wear during the HIKARU UTADA SCIENCE FICTION TOUR 2024, which ran from July to September 2024, with performances in Japan, Taipei, and Hong Kong.

We decided to take on this exciting challenge because we were inspired by the potential of their innovative materials and the vision of the future of Spiber co-founder Kazuhide Sekiyama. This dress was designed from a single piece of fabric, with necessary design elements such as pleats already integrated into the material. By optimally balancing Brewed Protein™ fiber with traditional materials, we achieved new levels of stretch and texture. The vibrant dress, characterized by a sculptural and fluid beauty, was created by the A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE team using a blend of Brewed Protein™ fiber and polyester and assembled using A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE’s Steam Stretch technique. This method uses the different shrinkage rates of the materials in response to heat, allowing the fabric to be shaped as intended while maintaining its stretch.
