Finding yourself behind the scenes of the Red Carpet of the 81st Venice Film Festival also means discovering the continuous care of the House of Chanel in accompanying some of the Maison’s muses, not leaving out any detail as the decades-long tradition of Haute Couture expertly recounts. Here in the photo gallery are three icons of international cinema Winona Rider, Sigourney Weaver and Taylor Russel.

The 81st Venice Film Festival will take place in the historic Palazzo del Cinema from Wednesday 28th August to Saturday 7th September 2024.

It was in 1920 that Gabrielle Chanel first discovered Venice alongside her great friends, the artist couple José-Maria and Misia Sert. The Floating City had such a profound effect on the designer it became one of her great sources of inspiration. Continuing the support for cinematic creation initiated by Gabrielle Chanel in the 20th century, the House is present every year at this major international event.

CHANEL accompanies its ambassadors and friends on the red carpet throughout the festival. A dinner organised for friends of the House will be held on Sunday 1st September 2024 at the legendary Harry’s Bar.

On the same day, there’ll be a preview screening of the short film ‘ALLÉGORIE CITADINE’, a tale written and directed by Alice Rohrwacher and JR, inspired by Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and incorporating elements of the show ‘Chiroptera’ – presented by JR last autumn on the façade of the Palais Garnier in Paris. CHANEL supported the creation of this film, that gives a cinematic dimension to the aforementioned event, and which drew on the expertise of the teams at the Opéra de Paris as well as the Métiers d’art at le19M and CHANEL, Grand Patron of the Paris Opera.

Winona RYDER, American actress and one of the lead actresses in the opening movie” Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” by Tim Burton, wore a custom black grain de poudre jacket and vest with a black satin collar with a white organza and crepe de chine blouse with a pleated plaston and black silk satin bow tie, and a black silk tulle skirt, inspired by look 37 from the CHANEL Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2007. CHANEL and cinema is a devoted and long-term love story. From early on in her career, Gabrielle Chanel forged an unbreakable bond with this art form that was born around the same time as her. Close to her fashion vocabulary and synonymous with modernity, cinema, more than any other art form, summoned movement, audacity and dreams.

In 1931, the couturière travelled to Hollywood at the invitation of American producer Samuel Goldwyn to dress Gloria Swanson and other actresses. She quickly understood how fashion could use cinema to reach all women. A friend and patron of great filmmakers such as Jean Cocteau, Luchino Visconti, Louis Malle and Alain Resnais, she dressed actresses from Romy Schneider to Jeanne Moreau and Delphine Seyrig, both on and off screen. Under the impetus of Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard, the House has taken this commitment to the seventh art even further.

CHANEL is dedicated to the artists it works with, accompanying them throughout their careers, and continues its relationship with actors and directors, from the great names of international cinema to the new generation. With the utmost respect for the artistic gesture of directors, CHANEL never impinges on the freedom and singularity of each project, whether it involves the creation of costumes, production support or assistance with the launch of a film. This longstanding commitment takes many forms, from support for festivals, institutions and emblematic ceremonies, to the restoration of masterpieces ensuring that the history of cinema is passed on

Sigourney Weaver, American actress being awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, wore a custom off-the shoulder black jacket fully embroidered with black sequins and embellished with tulle and silk braids and jewelled buttons with a custom black velvet mermaid skirt, inspired by look 30 from the CHANEL Haute Couture Fall-Winter 2019/20.
