On display for only a few more weeks, JR’s exhibition Dans La Lumière at Perrotin Paris evokes the intensity of CHIROPTERA—the monumental ballet created by JR, Damien Jalet, and Thomas Bangalter.

The works presented rouse memories of the evening in November 2023 when over twenty-five thousand spectators gathered at the Place de l’Opéra to illuminate 153 dancers performing on thirty-meter-high scaffolding.

To capture the movement and energy of the dancers, JR introduced a new series that fuses together three techniques: a photo transfer reinforced by black ink on wood with hand-drawn charcoal strokes. The result is radiant silhouettes that capture a striking interplay between light, darkness, and the dancers’ bodies.

Accompanying these pieces, two record players sit on stands in the exhibition. The spinning vinyls fill the space with soft music composed by Thomas Bangalter, evoking the poetic and captivating movement of the dancers eternalized in JR’s pieces.

Dans La Lumière also includes a number of photographic works that show the facade of the Palais Garnier transformed into a vast cave entrance at sunrise.
